CHAPTER 18

Sierra sat by the radio every night hoping to hear from Chris, Jim, or Lena. She was tired of going to bed depressed and tossing and turning all night. If she heard from them, perhaps she could sleep.

She glanced at her watch. After eleven. They wouldn’t be calling out over the radio this late. She reached for the knob to turn it off and heard a familiar voice. Chris! She sank into the chair. His broadcast was a warning for anyone listening.

“There is chatter of a possible seizure of assets over one hundred thousand dollars. People will panic and begin taking their money out of banks. A limit on daily withdrawals will follow. The country is in dire fiscal shape due to limited production and spending. Several countries are threatening to call our debts. It’s possible there will be a freeze on all bank accounts. The funds could be seized to cover our debts.”

Her hands shook, and her head began to ache.

The news worsened. “Most produce and livestock farms suffered from neglect during the quarantine, and the government isn’t willing to pay enough to meet operating costs. Livestock is about to be in short supply. Feed for the animals is scarce and unaffordable. There will be a mass slaughter of farm animals causing an initial glut followed by scarcity. Fresh fruit and vegetables will be even harder to come by.”

Chris paused for a few seconds, and Sierra thought he was gone, but he was merely catching his breath.

“Expect repeated brown-outs and black-outs. If you can, buy a backup power source and stock up on as much fuel as possible. Depending on solar may not be your best option.” Chris ended his broadcast, almost pleading. “I pray my information is wrong, but just in case, please be prepared, and warn as many as you can. Their lives may depend on it! Godspeed, my friends.”

Sierra sat alone, staring at the radio. Was it a blessing or a curse to know these things? Did it really matter anymore? There was nothing she could do.

She was on the verge of tears when her laughing brood came running down the stairs and headed for the kitchen. She allowed herself to smile and remembered why she was doing this. It wasn’t only for her nieces and nephew but for all the children who would one day inherit the country. They had to become heir to something good one day. There had to be some way to stop what was happening.

“I will not give up!” she whispered.

A few minutes later, Frank stood at Sierra’s door, his lips pinched and taut.

“Can we talk?”

“What’s your poison?” Sierra headed for the bar, ready to self-medicate. She raised her wine bottle in the air. “I’ll worry about my liver when this mess is over.” She put the bottle down a little too hard.

“An ice-cold beer would be great.” Frank rubbed his forehead. “Just grab me a six-pack!” he joked.

She handed him his favorite, rubbed his shoulder, and nodded toward the porch.
